“God have mercy on me a sinner.”
The tax collector’s prayer is the simplest and strongest in Scripture. He stood apart, unwilling to pretend righteousness he did not possess. Mercy was his only plea, and mercy was enough.
Jesus elevates this man because humility draws God near. A man becomes transformed when he stops performing spiritual strength and begins confessing spiritual need. God does not respond to prideful prayers.
He responds to honest ones. The tax collector walked away justified because he asked for what only God can give. Men often complicate repentance, but Jesus shows that mercy comes through humility, not eloquence.
The man who understands his need becomes the man God can restore.
Father, have mercy on me. Cleanse my heart and restore my spirit. Let humility lead me into Your grace.
